
This year’s July 4 will be a little more special for the New Yorkers, because it’s the day when the Statue of Liberty’s crown reopens. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks the visits at Lady Liberty’s crown were forbidden for security reasons. The news was made public by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, on Friday.
At the news conference that took place at the site, Salazar added that the reopening of the Statue of Liberty’s crown tour on the US Independence day is a “great birthday present for the American people.”
The authorities want to further stimulate the tourism in the area of the Statue of Liberty and the historic immigration center on the adjacent Ellis Island as they announced $25 million federal founds.
The National Park Service reports show the the popularity of the Statue of Liberty among tourists fluctuated through the years, showing an increase in 2007, when 3.2 million people visited the statue.
After the July 4 reopening, Lady Liberty will be able to host 10 people at any time. This means that 50,000 tourists a year can visit the statue, or 30 visitors an hour. The Interior Secretary saind at the news conference that plans to make additional improvements exist and after that about 100,000 people a year could view the Statue of Liberty’s crown.
