The Tamil Tiger rebels still hold a piece of beach in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka army officials declared that they are really close to recovering that little peace of land that is causing so much friction. More of international interest is that the government and military predict all of the remaining trapped civilians in rebel territory will be freed by Sunday.
Officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, this country is some 20 miles off the southern coast of India and is home to roughly 20 million people. Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts and rubber, Sri Lanka boasts a progressive and modern industrial economy and the highest per capita income in South Asia. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination. Sadly, it is not the above-mentioned that keeps world focus on this country.
Sri Lanka’s government is labeled as one of the “world’s worst perpetrators of enforced disappearances”, according to a study by US-based pressure group ‘Human Rights Watch’ (HRW). An HRW report accuses security forces and pro-government militias of abducting and “disappearing” hundreds of people – mostly Tamils – since 2006.
Mostly, the Sri Lanka governement blames the Tamil Tiger rebels, who held quite an important peace of land but now are closed down to just approximately 3 km, Military officials told VOA News. They should be captures soon, the army promises, as they are being approached from both north and south on a very narrow piece of the coastline.
Lakshman Hulugalle, who heads the military’s national security media center, told VOA the rebels can not be finished off until soldiers are assured the civilians are safe. He sais that “Almost 6,000 people have come into the government controlled area. Hopefully, next 24 hour or 48 hours, the balance of people will come into our area”

Gordon Brown seems to be supporting the LTTE, when he is warning Sri Lanka to cease military operations. The LTTE is the most vicious, ruthless, inhuman, demonic terrorist group in South Asia, worse than Al Qaeda and the Taliban combined. The world has classified LTTE as a terrorist group. Why doesn’t Gordon Brown warn the LTTE to lay down their arms and surrender? In the mean time Hilary Clinton should get her facts right, before making any comments. The US and UK must not have double standards when thousands of innocent civilians were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention inhuman torture of water boarding and other cruel torture techniques done by their soldiers, in the name of wiping out terrorism. When confronted with vicious snakes they must be terminated.
