On the national radio station in Sri Lanka, the president of the country declared that The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was “crushed” and that total victory over these “rebels” (terrorists to say the truth) is imminent. More strongly put, the the Defense Ministry says the remaining rebels are preparing to commit “mass suicide.”
Mahinda Rajapaksa, is the 5th and current executive President of Sri Lanka. A lawyer by profession, Rajapaksa was first elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 1970, and served as prime minister from April 6, 2004 until his victory in the 2005 Presidential election. He was sworn in for a six-year term as president on November 19, 2005. Addressing to a United Nations summit in Jordan (newly established) he declared that he will soon return to his homeland as a leader who “that crushed terrorism.”
“With the troops moving and linking up we have completely confined the LTTE Sea Tigers onto ground,” he said. “So that’s a significant victory. With that we have confined LTTE to less than a two-square-kilometer area and surrounded them on ground from all directions.” – Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara tells VOA News
Udaya Nanayakkara (seen in the picture) also explained that two army divisions have pressed the Rebels, narrowing their position and closing in from two different directions. We described this situation, as it was yesterday, in a previous post.
The rebels have not shown so far any intention of surrendering, nor have they attempted to retreat. However, a statement from an LTTE official, posted on the Internet, said the rebels are prepared “to take all necessary measures that would immediately stop the current carnage.”
Military officials informed that Sri Lanka had refused a proposal, the details of which are not fully know, made by the LTTE Rebels some days ago. This cease-fire offer was not only rejected, but Sri Lanka also cut off, by doing so, access of Red Cross help teams to those civilians that remain trapped. Statistics show that some 17,000 Tamil civilians have fled the fighting in recent days and are now in government care.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is warning Sri Lanka it will face consequences for not halting the fighting and refusing to allow humanitarian access to the combat zone.
