The Iranian apeal court decided in the case of the American journalist Roxana Saberi. The journalist will be freed after her initial eight-year jail sentence was downgraded to a suspended two-year term.
Roxana Saberi, was arrestet and convicted on spying charges, in Iran, in January. At the time, the Iranian-American television reporter, was living in Iran for six years and she was found guilty for “cooperating with a hostile state”. Iranian court’s harsh decision was longly discussed in media at the time and brought everyone’s attention to the case. Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad intervention in the case was of help and the appeal court was asked the review the case.
As a form of protest, the former US beauty queen refused to eat and launched a hunger strike on April 21. She only accepted to drink water or sugared water, but she ended up in the prison clinic.
32-year old jurnalist’s lawyer Saleh Nikbakht confirmed appeal court’s verdict, saying that “Her punishment has been changed to a suspended two-year sentence and she will be out of prison.”
Mr Reza Saberi said too that Roxana would be allowed to leave Iran. Saberi’s parents Reza and Akiko will arrive at Tehran’s Evin jail, to take their daughter back home.
Roxana Saberi has reported for US National Public Radio, the BBC and Fox News and it seems that her sentence was downgraded as Tehran’s reaction to Obama’s requests of better ties between the twos.
