Sonia Sotomayor, President’s Obama nominee for the Supreme Court has the numbers on her side

President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, is in front of the election as Democrats far outnumbered Republicans on Capitol Hill. Despite all this, her confirmation is yet to be assured because democrats have only 59 votes in the Senate, one short of the 60 needed to prevent a postponement.

But all this could change with the outcome of the Minnesota Senate race, result expected about the same time the Senate will move to a final vote on Sotomayor. Democrat Al Franken seems to be the leader of this election and his victory would give Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid the 60 votes needed.

Nevertheless, Republican Norm Coleman would have the option to appeal a Franken victory, decision that national Republicans have been advising him to leave open.
