Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker, has accused the CIA of misleading her on the issue of water-boarding, a torture technique that the Bush Administration is reported to have used against certain detainees.
Nancy vehemently said that it was clear that the CIA had mentioned in 2002 that water-boarding had not been used, whereas now it was revealed that it was. Republicans have charged that Pelosi was aware, something that she has strongly denied. Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri for instance has been severely critical of Pelosi, who he says has been calling anti-terror forces liars. Kit mentioned that while he was not present when the CIA is said to have Pelosi on water-boarding (simulated drowning as interrogation technique), he had reviewed their material.
The Republican Party has supported the CIA against Pelosi’s allegation and made reference to the 2002 briefing on the intensified interrogation methods used on Abu Zubaydah. Spokesman for CIA, Mr George Little has claimed that the CIA does not mislead Congress and said that the chart of briefings for lawmakers by the CIO where Pelosi attended once, “is true to the language in the agency’s records, without vouching for its accuracy. Incidentally, accuracy of such notings by CIA personnel was to be ascertained and verified by Congress.
CIA has also rejected former VP Cheney’s request top de-classify and release secret memos about efficany of water-boarding and other interrogation techniques in obtaining information from terror detainees, on the grounds that such memos were under pending litigation.
