The 82nd edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest took place last night. The final saw 12 twelve students who had the difficult task to spell some difficult words that are very hard to write for many of us. The Spelling Bee 2009 final was won by Kavya Shivashankar, a student from Olathe, Kansas who had to spell “laodicean” to win the contest. The 13-year-old has her origins in India, but her parents decided to migrate to the USA probably looking for a better life for their daughter.
Kavya Shivashankar is at her four attempt at the National Spelling Bee contest, and in the previous three finals she finished on the 10th place, then on the eighth place, while last year she came in fourth. In order to win the $400,000 prize, Kavya had to spell words like “hydrargyrum,” “blancmange,” or “baignoire.” As a curios fact, “laodicean” the word that made her the winner describes a person indifferent in religion or politics.
Many of you probably watched the National Spelling Bee 2009 final on ABC last night in a show hosted by Tom Bergeron, an Emmy Award winner.
Kavya Shivashankar is a student at the California Trail Junior High School, and she dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon, but at the moment she likes swimming, bicycling, playing the violin, and learning Indian dances.
