It appears that nominating a gay American for the Supreme Court is not entirely possible due to the intolerance of at least one high profile Republican senator who would not like to see this happening.

The Conservative leaders think that the nomination of a gay or lesbian justice could only make things worse for President Obama making it harder for him to confirm a replacement for Souter. The affirmation was back up on Wednesday by a Republican senator who expressed his concern with having a gay nominee.

GOP Chief Deputy Whip John Thune said that the nominee should be straight otherwise the justice would be “a bridge too far right now”, implying that no matter what your abilities are, right now the most important thing is for you to be straight. On the other hand, Sen. Jeff Sessions (Ala.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in an interview today that he doesn’t think the nominee’s sexual orientation will have a leading role in electing him and that being gay doesn’t result in an automatic disqualification.
