Los Angeles Dodgers' outfielder Manny Ramirez
Only a few months after New York Yankee’s star Alex Rodriguez was involved in a major drugs scandal in February, LA Dodgers’ outfielder Manny Ramirez was banned by Major League Baseball for 50 games.
Ramirez is the latest high-profile player accused to have taken drugs. Even though the commissioner’s office didn’t announce the specific violation, Ramirez risks a one-third lose of his $25 million salary.
Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder claims that he was following medication prescribed by his physician for a personal health issue . Ramirez defended himself saying that he was not taking steroids, adding that he “have taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.”
Anyway Ramirez’ case differs from Rodriguez’, as the Yankee’s star admitted to have taken steroids from 2001-03, while playing for Texas, period when the Major League Baseball‘s drug policy was more lenient.
Manny Ramirez is this year’s third suspended player, following Philadelphia reliever J.C. Romero and Yankees pitcher Sergio Mitre.
The best-known drug scandal in the MLB that involved a 10-day suspension was the case of Baltimore’s Rafael Palmeiro in 2005.
