A Briton was picked to do what was called the “best job in the world” this Wednesday. 16 finalists hoped that they will be the caretakers of an Australian tropical island, but Ben Southall, aged 34, became one.

The marketing campain powered by Tourism Queensland that desires to promote tourism in the Australian state attracted nearly 34,700 videos entries from almost 200 countries. Every single uploader wanted the job of his dreams — caretaker of an Australian island.

The winner of the “best job in the world”, will have to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and let the Tourism Queensland and the world what he’ve seen. He will have to do this for the next six moths of his life plus feeding the fishes and cleaning the pool — optional — and earn $110,000. Does anyone know if there are any more vacancies? I’m interested too.

The “Best Job in the World” competition launched in January by Tourism Queensland was one of the web’s top items and everyone that wanted the job had to send a 60-second video application to persuade the jury that they are perfect for the job.

The final 16 contestants were elected from the total of 34,700 that was cut to a top 50. The final 16 gathered people from 15 countries and various jobs, like students, journalists, TV presenters, photographers, a receptionist,  charity fundraiser, radio DJ, teacher and an actress. It seems that the charity fundraiser was the lucky one.
