The tragic event that happened almost three years ago still hunts a family in Orange County, California. Although they have tried to move past the incident, the family is denied closure because of the Internet media continue to “investigate” the accident.
The tragic events started on October 31, 2006. Nikki Catsouras took the keys to her father’s Porshe 911 Carrera and walked out for a drive even if she was forbidden to drive the sports car. This poor judgment from her side cost her her life as she lost control of the car when doing almost 100 mph, hit a Honda and then slammed into a concrete toll booth. The crash was so severe that Nikki was nearly decapitated upon impact.
But this was just the beginning of Nikki’s family long road of sufferance. In the weeks following the accident e-mails harassing each member of Nikki’s family started to arrive. Sick people even created MySpace pages with Nikki’s name and photos from the crash and even received comments such as “What a waste of a Porsche” or “That spoiled rich girl deserved it.”
The whole situation blew out of proportions. A Russian cyber criminal even used this popular situation to develop a malware under the disguise of a “video” of the crime scene. The malware was optimized to appear first in any Internet searches for “Nikki Catsouras” and apparently contained several variants of worms and viruses. Everybody took advantage of the tragic events that happened on that last day of October, 2006. Nobody cared about the family’s feelings. They all tried to make the best of what seemed for many people just a popular situation from which money could be made. Within months, what seemed to be a tragic incident turned into a twisted Internet phenomenon, one of the strangest I have ever seen.
