Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has just invented a device that can absorb very efficient and with low cost the petrol that is floating into seas.

The Seaswarm robot is composed from a long band that has 5 m in length and 2 m in width covered with a network of nano-filaments that are capable to absorb 20 times its one weight of petrol and at the same time no water molecule. After the job is done the material can be heated and the oil will fell. So the robot can be used again.

The MIT engineers are thinking of an army of such robots that can coordinate themsefls with wireless technology and GPS.

It is estimated tat with 5000 robots the Golf of Mexico could be cleaned up in about one month from the oil disaster that is happening these days.

Microsoft, one of the biggest computer technology-related company, has released a new search engine today after weeks of speculation. The new search engine is called Bing, and it’s a replacement of the old and rusty Live Search. Microsoft Bing should compete against the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Microsoft wants a bigger share of the search market, and the company claims that Bing’s search technology is better than what Google and Yahoo have to offer. Reports showed that Microsoft Bing is not something revolutionary or better than Google, but it’s still in early beta and it is said that it has a lot to offer.

An advantage of the Bing search engine comes of the way it returns image searches. Many internet users prefer “all on one page” image collections, and this is exactly what Microsoft offers. The old Live Search now redirects to Bing, and you can head over to www.Bing.com to see what it has to offer.

The latest update on Bing, Microsoft’s new search engine, is that it is officially coming forward on June 3rd, less than a week from now.

Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corporation since January 2000, confirmed wide spread rumours that Microsoft’s new search engine will be “stuck” with the name Bing. It was previously called Kumo (don’t ask), and it is basically the reborn, refurnished and all colored-up version of the old Live! search engine.

New Mirosoft Search Engine - BING

Initially, notable improvements in general searches included the addition of related searches (called “Explorer pane” on the left side of search results) based on semantic technology from PowerSet, a search company Microsoft purchased in 2008, search suggestions as you type, and the ability to keep track of your search history.

As we see it at this point, the engine has a simple yet attractive design, with highlights on speed and easy-to-find utilties. It has a colorful interface and the picture/background is supposed to change on a daily basis (probably it will also include some sort of themes if you log in) and a wide center-top-left search text-box.

So as to not be mean and say that “Bing” is kind of silly, let’s try to see what exactly they were thinking with this name. The word “bing” is an onomonopia. It typically represents a sound of arrival or conclusion, such as the sound made when an elevator arrives. We will all see how well this word will stick.

As far as I`m concerned, a new search system is still proof that Microsoft are aware of the need for change. Bing may be a bit more simple to pronounce than Google, but the only real and relevant advantage to it that I can think of is that it’s implemented in Internet Explorer and Windows shortcuts. “It comes with the house”, and for some people that works because they either don’t know how to change the default search engine, don’t care or don’t know the difference. And there is a difference, that I can say with certainty, between Live search and Google. Or at least I can until June 3rd, when Bing will bing bing bing and people will click click click. Or will they? Wait and see, my grandma always said.

It seems like the competitors for iPod Touch/phone’s throne are multiplying. Until now there was Palm Pre but it seems that from this fall another gadget will be joining the duo. Zune HD is produced by Microsoft and it is, of course, yet another touch-screen enabled device.

Aside from being just another nit gadget device, the biggest surprise (and I mean that in the good way) comes from the association with Xbox. According to Engadget, the Zune HD will have Xbox Live connectivity which is quite a big deal on such a smaller device.

A promising start for Zune HD especially if Microsoft will successfully combine Xbox Live, Xbox 360 and the Zune HD is one super high-tech device. So the ball is now in Apple’s court and we cannot be happier because this kind of completion on the market will only bring customers newer, better and cooler devices.

According to NASA the landing of the space shuttle Atlantis has been delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Cloudy skies and rain storms made Atlantis’ scheduled landing in Florida on Friday impossible. The space shuttle is coming back after a successful mission to modernize the Hubble Space Telescope and the new landing date is set on Saturday at 9:16 a.m. EDT (1316 GMT) at the Kennedy Space Center.

Mission commentator Kyle Herring said it was a very easy decision to make considering the weather conditions which were not in favor of the shuttle’s homecoming. However, if the conditions remain the same, the shuttle will be requested to land on its backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

The Atlantis space shuttle has been orbiting Earth for 11 days and its mission was to refurbish the Hubble Space Telescope. The famous telescope was equipped with brand new cameras, batteries and positioning gyroscopes that should put Hubble among the world’s top astronomical instruments again. Furthermore, the astronauts repaired two of the telescope’s instruments which were not in the original refurbish plan.

The new installed gadgets and the modernization of the telescope should keep Hubble on the cutting edge of scientific research at least until June 2014. From that date the infrared-sensitive James Webb Space Telescope is programmed to take Hubble’s place.

According to NASA, the space shuttle has enough supplies to delay the landing until Monday if necessary.

Sprint reported Tuesday the release date and information regarding the price of the Palm Pre smartphone. The Pre is a promising candidate to take over IPhone’s throne and all its good reviews give him a head start. Sprint is trying to do its best in getting a head start, releasing the gadget on June 6, just two days before the beginning of Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, conference where Apple will come up with more information about the new iPhone OS 3.0 software.

The most important question is of course pricing. Sprint tries to make Pre a dangerous competitor for iPhone, evaluating the price around $200 but, as with the iPhone, you will have to sign up for a two year service plan. Another down point will be the $100 mail-in discount which finally brings the Pre at a total of $300.

The Pre’s specifications are almost the same as the entry-level iPhone’s : 8GB of onboard storage, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 (including stereo audio support), a 3.1-inch touchscreen, GPS, and a 3-megapixel camera. In addition, the Pre sports a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and sensors for ambient light, acceleration, and proximity. Pre is using Palm’s new WebOS software, which was first tested at the Consumer Electronics Show last January.

For the two year contract that you have to sign up for in order to purchase Pre, Sprint lets you to choose between Everything Data plans or one of its Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plans, which came at approximately the same price of $70 a month. Nevertheless, if you would like to also get new features such as Touchstone charging system, that gives you the satisfaction of recharging your phone by simply placing it on top of the device, you will have to expect more money coming out of your pocket.

In this article we are not trying to compare the up-coming Palm Pre ($199,00) with touch-screen smartphone with Apple’s iPhone 3G. This will be dealt with in a coming article, as Palm have unveiled only partially their come-back smarphone. So more in the near future, as things evolve.

Palm Logo

Palm’s Pre has been generating plenty of buzz since it was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. Supposed (and some truly hope so) to be the “Iphone assassin” and “Blackberry killer”, the new Palm model has a bit of everything and something unique. Still, will this new gadget from veteran label Palm really storm the market? Too early to say.

Developer of the modern personal digital assistant and an early player in smartphones, Palm, Inc. is a personal digital assistant and smartphone manufacturer headquartered in Sunnyvale, California that is responsible for popular products such as the Zire, Tungsten PDAs, Treo smartphones and the LifeDrive. Previous product lines include the Palm Pilot, Palm III, Palm V and Palm VII. While their older devices run Palm OS Garnet, four editions of the Treo run Windows Mobile. In early 2009 Palm announced a new operating system, Palm webOS, which is expected to replace the original Palm OS Garnet.

The new phone is currently scheduled for release on the 6th June 2009 and will be the first to use Palm’s Linux-based operating system Palm webOS. The Pre functions as a camera phone, a portable media player, a GPS system, and Internet client (with text messaging, email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity).

Sprint Nextel is the official carrier in the USA, and along with Bell Mobility (Canada distribution), they surely await the new model with hope in their eyes.

Pam Pre Up-Slidded

Regarding financial details, the Pre’s $199.99 launch price requires the usual two-year contract. The company will also be offering a wireless charger for an additional $69.99.

What I like best so far is that Palm enhances user-phone accessibility with keeping the classic keyboard in addition to a pretty good looking touch-pad. Let’s face it, even if touching a glass can be cool, actually having tactile feedback won’t be topped by any touchscreen too soon. Speed is also a factor as you can use both thumbs. Sure, a pen could be a solution but that still presumes taking it out of the holder, putting it back and uses both hands.

On February 16, 2009, Adobe announced that it will be developing a version of Adobe Flash Player for webOS. This might do more good through marketing than directly, but it still notable for Palm fans.

We will keep you updated with this phone. This news about the new Palm jewel might rush Apple to introduce it’s new IPhone(s) sooner, because as this stand at this point the Pre is coming sooner by some days.

Today was an important day for astronauts on the Atlantis space shuttle as they managed to repair a spectrograph who didn’t work for a long time. Yesterday, two astronauts repaired a camera, while today Michael Massimino and Michael Good repaired the spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope. The two astronauts along with their colleagues who repaired the camera had to go for a space walk in order to repair the two devices of the Hubble.

Massimino and Good were announced before the mission that their colleagues repaired two channels of the camera, while the third doesn’t work. However, NASA along with John Grunsfeld (one of the astronauts who made the repairs) said that this was a huge success as the “power is restored” thanks to the two science channels which carry 95% of the output.

For the moment NASA cannot tell if the today’s spacewalk was just as successful, but we should hear more soon. In the following days, the Atlantis astronauts will make two other spacewalks in order to complete their mission. Thanks to their work, the Hubble Telescope will perform once again at almost full potential.
