The death of Dom DeLuise

The d_deluiseactor and comedian Dom DeLuise died Monday night in his sleep after struggling with a long illness. He was 75 years old and spent his whole life trying to put a smile on people’s faces. The beloved actor had also another passion, cooking, that completed the second part of his life. He made a formidable second career out of being a chef of a fine cuisine. He wrote two cookbooks and often appeared on morning TV shows to present his recipes.

As an actor, he was incredibly productive, appearing in all sorts of movies, TV shows and also in Broadway plays.On TV, DeLuise played private eye Kenny Ketchem on NBC’s Saturday kiddie show The Shari Lewis Show. He was a regular on the sketch comedy show The Entertainers in the mid-’60s and The Dean Martin Show in the early ’70s. His own brief sitcoms include Lotsa Luck in 1973, The Dom DeLuise Show in 1987. In the early 1990s, DeLuise hosted one of the myriad revivals of Candid Camera, and in the mid-90s viewers were Cooking with Dom Deluise.In recent years, DeLuise has done lots of voice work for animated features and series. His pleasantly manic voice can be heard in The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and other cartoons and related sequels, series, and video games.

In 1984, DeLuise, a Brooklyn native, was named “King of Brooklyn” by local civic leaders. The title is largely ceremonial. He’s also sung opera in Die Fledermaus with the New York Metropolitan, and written two cookbooks, “Eat This” and “Eat This Too”.

While his passion for food made him feel good, his heath was in jeopardy when the actor battled obesity(325 pounds at one point) for a long period of his life. His family supported him and tried to put him on different diets but DeLuise refused until 1993 when he was forced to lose 100 pounds in order to have a hip replacement surgency.

He met his soon to be wife in Provincetown, Mass., and had three sons, all of them became actors and costarred with their father in the 1990s TV series “SeaQuestDSV”.
