It looks like Paramount’s “Star Trek” have sent las week’s box-office leader “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” into a wormhole, as the “reboot” of the beloved sci-fi series does $72.5 million. The latest “Trek” movie is a record-breaker beating “The Dark Knight” record for an IMAX haul (it earned $8 million on the giant screens alone) and May second week’s all-time earnings, not to speak about the previous “Treks.” The movie profit from positive reviews, which might have convinced the audience to crowd to the theaters at “warp speed.”
The box-office top five looks like this:
#1 “Star Trek” ($72.5 million)
#2 “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” ($27 million)
#3 “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” ($10.4 million)
#4 “Obsessed” ($6.6 million)
#5 “17 Again” ($4.4 million)
Wolverine’s fellow mutants Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm must be a little upset with their clawed friend as the story of his life had the lowest audience ever for the “X-Men” after it earned $27 millon. Of course piracy had a great influence.
While USS Enterprise was traveling at the speed of light, “Monsters vs. Aliens” dropped off the top five. This week’s second runner-up was “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” doing $10.4 million, for a total of $30.2 million.
“Obsessed,” starring Idris Elba and Beyonce Knowles, recorded $6.6 million earnings and a total of $56.2 million, being the #4 in the box-office top five. Matthew Perry gets the chance to rewrite his life in “17 Again” and probably would also like to turn back in time and bring more than $4.41 million.
Anyway, the box-office looks good this week, bringing movies for all tastes, from sci-fi to thriller and commedy. Though I wonder how were James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members in their early days?
